An Ideas Critique Focuses On The Story Not As What It Is

An ideas critique focuses on the story not as what it is rhetorically (as in a rhetorical critique), you treat it as a voice in the conversation (Ramage, 2015). In this, you start to look at how the ideas of the writer either mesh or conflict with your own. It is very difficult to keep your own personal beliefs from surfacing in this style and overtaking the paper. In The Fourth State of Matter, Jo Ann Beard recalls her experiences in the University of Iowa physics department and the shooting that transpired there. Also, she talks a great deal about her home life, her special connection with her dogs and how her life is this sort of controlled chaos. Ethically, you can definitely call into question her thought process in keeping her collie alive. I’m fully aware of the attachmen t to it, but the whole situation can definitely have a reader questioning her intentions with the collie. Most people, no matter how in love with their pets they are, will see the wrong in keeping a suffering animal alive. It is much better for the pet to not be kept alive just for the sanity of the owner. Another thing that is seemingly tossed off with no regard is the fact that it seems that she and her boss, Christoph, and her have an intimate relationship. Even though it is good that she has found someone that has made her happy and enjoy going to work, it is morally wrong. But even through all of that, Beard persuades her reader that is something of so little significance because of how her home life is. It only adds to the fact that her life is a sort of controlled chaos. Her use of appeal to pathos is pretty similar to that in the use of appeal to logos. She describes her dog and crumbling relationship with her husband in order to create an emotional bond between the reader a nd the piece itself. When it comes to her dog it is obvious.
